Critical Choices
PREFACE

Medical technology today can keep us alive far beyond what was once considered normal, and that can be wonderful. However, that same technology can also keep us alive beyond what some might consider desirable, and that sometimes creates problems.

This book has been written because most people remain unaware of the numerous medical procedures used today to sustain life, and therefore have not taken the time to decide on their preferences and to make their wishes known.

Some people have signed Living Wills without realizing they do not become valid until the maker has been certified as suffering from an "incurable or irreversible condition." Even then, such documents will probably apply only to those medical procedures which are clearly "heroic," yet may fail to cover the gray areas between "heroics" and "comfort."

Because our courts have been unable to keep pace with medical advances, many families suddenly face agonizing decisions regarding the type of health care to be administered to their loved ones. We believe these decisions are best made now, by you, and not postponed for your family to face in times of deepest stress.

This book contains two parts, the CRITICAL INFORMATION and the CRITICAL DOCUMENTS. We urge you to become familiar with the many choices, then to put your decisions in writing on the pages provided, and finally to lodge copies with your physician, your attorney and those closest to you.

In the event of serious illness or injury, you may be unable to communicate your wishes. We urge you to do it now, for later may be too late.
